fightingtorque

Not a great Porsche, but in 1976 it would have been an excellent VW.
This was my only motor for most of '95-'00 and proved to be an extremely competent allrounder. In 1998 it got the fightingtorrque treatment, which made it into a halfway decent sports/ touring car.

PERFORMANCE
2000cc 4 cylinder on Bosch K-Jet mechanical injection

Max power: 140bhp (est)

Max speed: 130mph @ 6000rpm and still pulling.

0-60: About 8-9 seconds.

This VW derived engine is a little bit nasty, there's quite a bit of power there now but it still doesn't sing like a Lotus, or presumably a real Porsche, would. more>

ON THE ROAD
The car sits somewhere between a sports saloon and a real sportscar.

The COG is low, and the weight distribution is well balanced (rear mounted transmission) so it grips well and corners fast and flat. It is a little bit slow to respond, partly this is inherent in the high polar moment of inertia layout, but it would also benefit from a higher ratio steering rack.
Brakes are just ok.

Straight line performance after modification is pretty lively, it sounds ok-ish, and it can haul quite a bit of gear.

I took it to France 3 times, the first time included an excursion into a ditch, second time involved a slight timing and flat phone battery problem.

This meant the only way to meet Mum &Dad at 4pm outside Chartres Cathedral was to run at 115mph from Calais to Paris, then nail it from Paris to Chartres.

The final trip was a camping holiday, with two windsurfers on top and the silencer rubbing on the road it could still eat those autoroutes.

I'd buy another front engined Porsche, but it would be 944 or maybe a 924 Turbo.

HISTORY
I covered 30k miles in unmodified form, taking it up to about 170k.

What started as a top overhaul ended up with a rebore, new pistons, bearings, increased compression ratio from 9.3 to 9.8:1 by skimming the block, head rebuild, ported the head myself, fitted large throttle body, kent cam, K&N and had sports exhaust system built by Custom Chrome.

At the same time I changed to a 5-speed box, rebuilt the brakes. Over the following year I also rebuilt most of the front suspension and installed a 944Turbo style nosecone. Also dabbled in audio setup, with component speakers and a 10 inch boxed sub in the boot.

Unfortunately in 2001 it shot an oil gallery plug out, which is behind the water pump, and I haven't had a chance to fix it so it's been in the barn since then. I think the world has moved on now and not sure I need a tatty '77 924 with 185k on it.
